John Smithers appointed Chief Executive Officer of Tech Collective

Providence, RI – August 17, 2016 – Tech Collective, the Industry Association for IT and Bioscience, today announced that the Board of Directors appointed John Smithers as Chief Executive Officer effective August 15, 2016. John will manage the day to day operations and oversee the strategic direction of the nonprofit organization.

“We are grateful to the Tech Collective staff who have played a significant role in maintaining the existing programs and operations while we searched for the person to take on this very important role,” said Phil Carlucci, Interim Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Tech Collective. “We are extremely confident in John’s experience and enthusiasm for the organization. We believe his influence will directly impact and improve Rhode Island’s IT and bioscience industries and communities.”

John’s resume includes over 20 years of executive leadership and strategic consulting at a number of higher-ed, non-profit, and technology organizations. Prior to this appointment, John worked at Strata Information Group in San Diego providing interim senior management services and guidance. In addition, John partnered with the CEO of OSHEAN, to develop and implement a 3 year strategic and operational business plan. Prior to that, John served as CIO at Johnson & Wales for over ten years. As a member of RIDE’s Technology Advisory Committee, he contributed to the development of strategy for adult ed programs utilizing technology and the continued improvement of instructional practices. John received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY and has continued his education, receiving a Project Management Certificate from Boston University and System Dynamics Certificate at MIT.
