3/8/08 Newport Daily News - Girls Get Taste of Science, Technology

Thank You to all of our sponsors and volunteers for making GRRL Tech 2008 a great success!

Thank you also goes out to Roger Williams University President, Roy J. Nirschel, for his generous raffle donation of 2 full, 4-year RWU scholarships! It is an amazing contribution that sets a precedent of the value of education and of community involvement.

A very special thanks also goes to GRRL Tech keynote speaker, the Honorable Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts. She graciously shared her experiences and encouraged the girls to break through the barriers holding them back - gender or experience, personal or societal. Being Rhode Islands first female Lt. Governor, she is the perfect role model for every woman and girl.

Many young women are simply not aware of the career options available to them in these fields. Were attacking the gender equity problem by making technology careers genderless.

GRRL (Girls Reaching Remarkable Levels) Tech is a one of a kind, interactive, high-energy career expo designed exclusively for female high school students and their teachers. The event endeavors to ensure that girls have an equal opportunity to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics from a positive vantage point as well as raise the awareness of teachers in implementing gender equity in education and learning the latest techniques in preparing students for success in college and soft skills for success in business.

This year, GRRL Tech showed the largest turn out yet over 400 girls from 22 Rhode Island high schools state-wide! Striving to interest and engage girls in STEM (Scinece, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields, the expos 20 interactive workshops included human anatomy, crime scene forensics, computer animation, computer programming, environmental engineering, architecture, biotechnology and marine biology. A panel of successful female technology professionals from Raytheon, Roger Williams University, Verizon, Atrion Networking Corporation, Cisco Systems and Gilbane Building Company also addressed the girls and their questions.

The Technology Crisis
Nationwide, enrollment in STEM studies have declined by 50%! This is huge crisis in the workforce, particularly in Rhode Island, where related test scores and education enrollment are far below average. In the Information Technology fields alone, for example, three of Rhode Islands higher education institutions have either dropped or significantly reduced IT course offerings due to poor participation rates. In the same industry, the average number of professional women in the workforce is one for every 9 men!
